Administrative / Biographical History

Formed in Manchester in 1866 as the Amalgamated Society of Tailors, the union became the Amalgamated Society of Tailors and Tailoresses in 1906. It absorbed a number of local societies of tailors before merging with the Tailors and Garment Workers' Union in 1932 to form the National Union of Tailors and Garment Workers.

Other records of this union are held in the London Archive, Department of Politics, Queen Mary & Westfield College, London. The records of numerous textile unions are in the Lancashire Record Office. The main archives of the General, Municipal, Boilermakers and Allied Trades Union (later GMB), including the boilermakers' section, remain with the union at its national college.
