Scope and Content

Contains detailed accounts of campaigns in which Jackson served and his part in them, including: "Expedition to Holland", 1799, (an earlier version of which appears as "The expedition to the Helder") and "Expedition and proceedings up the Mediterranean", 1800 (an earlier version of which appears as "Journal of a voyage and expedition commenced in the spring of 1800"); descriptions of Jackson's military and other travels, the places and people he saw, and the stories he heard, including: "A sketch of the islands of Malta and Gozo", "Sketch of the island of Minorca", "Excursion to France" (with copies of Jackson's letters describing in detail a visit to Paris via Dieppe and Rouen, during which he met Napoleon Bonaparte), 1800- 1803; "Notes on a voyage to the East Indies, also memorandum of such things as particularly struck my observation there", including life in Calcutta and elsewhere in Bengal, and also the Cape of Good Hope, St Helena and Ascension Island, 1805-1809; "Voyage to Ceylon", including a description of life there, 1811- 1813; domestic and business affairs, 1819-1826; "Journal of the expedition into Kandia", including an account of the lives of Jackson and his father, and also a poem to Eliza[beth Jackson].

JACK/4/2/1/4 is typed; JACK/4/2/1/1 contains a note on Jackson's career and the address of P.L. Jackson; JACK/4/2/1/2 contains miscellaneous notes inside the front and back covers.


The items originally listed as 4/2/4 and 4/2/6 have been removed; 4/2/4 was a photocopy of what is now JACK/4/2/1/4, and 4/2/6 was a photocopy of JACK/4/2/1/1. JACK/4/2/1/4 is a transcript of JACK/4/2/1, with some notes, made by "J.R.W.", 12 Apr 1966.
