Papers relating to Nottinghamshire local history compiled by Cecil Foljambe (1846-1907),1st Earl of Liverpool, 1895-1902

A series of letters comprises the main grouping in the collection. This includes: letter fromR.W. Wordsworth, Thoresby, to Cecil Foljambe regarding an exchange [of property] between LordManvers and the Duke of Portland, 2 February 1897; letters from E. Stafford Howard, Office of Woods,to Cecil Foljambe regarding the cost and availability of allotments and other property, 11 February1897-3 March 1897; letters from William Stevenson to Cecil Foljambe regarding placenames and thehistory of Blyth Low Hill, Bassetlaw and Dunham on Trent, Nottinghamshire and an enclosedtranscription from the Public Record Office's Calendar of Close Rolls, 21 September 1895-7 April1902.

Other papers in the collection include the following: transcription from the Calendar of CloseRolls made by William Stevenson, 1902; typescript notes relating to the ownership of the soil ofSherwood Forest and the claim of the Duke of Portland to the Hays of Birkland and Bilhagh, undated;printed illustration and plan of Nottingham Castle, undated; newspaper article relating toNottinghamshire family names from the Nottingham Daily Express, 1891-1892; page of 'The GoldenPenny' journal for 4 May 1901 containing an article about R.S. Wilson of Tuxford Hall,Nottinghamshire; addresses clipped from envelopes sent to Cecil Foljambe.

Several items in the collection are written on headed paper of the Office of Woods, Forests andLand Revenues, a department that administered Crown assets.

Cecil George Savile Foljambe (1846-1907), 1st Earl of Liverpool was born in Osberton,Nottinghamshire and educated at Eton. He retired from the Royal Navy as a lieutenant in 1870 andembarked upon a career in politics. He represented North Nottinghamshire in parliament from 1880,and Mansfield Division from 1885 until 1892. He was given the titles Baron Hawkesbury, ViscountHawkesbury, and Earl of Liverpool. Foljambe pursued an interest in antiquarian matters. Hepublished, and was vice-president of the Thoroton Society of Nottinghamshire. He lived for 28 yearsat Cockglode near Ollerton, Nottinghamshire.

The manuscripts in this collection represent an artificial group, being separate documentscreated or assembled by Lord Liverpool and placed in local history books which he subsequently gaveto the University Library.

The collection has been divided by document type into two series: letters and other papers.Within these series, items have been arranged chronologically.
