Scope and Content

Administrative / Biographical History

The Department was established with the appointment of E G Gardner to the chair of Italian in 1920. In 1944, the chair of Italian was suspended, and not revived until 1961, when Giovanni Aquilecchia was appointed.

The Department taught an honours degree in Italian, as well as various joint honours degrees and the ordinary B.A. It was part of the Faculty of Arts. A departmental board was established for the Department in 1973 in line with the revised University Charter. As a small department, it did not develop the elaborate bureaucracy of committees and working groups of some larger University departments. Instead, School of Modern Languages took on many administrative arrangements for the department from the mid-1980s, in conjunction with the other modern European language departments.
