Administrative / Biographical History
Dr Alec MacQueen, M.B., Ch.B., M.R.C.P.E., joined the Department of Physiology and Biochemistry at Queens College, Dundee in 1950 where he remained for the rest of his academic career. His research interest at first centred on diabetics but he soon became interested in problems of medical ethics such as euthanasia, organ transplants and abortion. His enthusiasm for debate led to the formation of a philosophy and science club centred on Dundee. MacQueen's methods of teaching anticipated later medical trends, in particular his use of clinical problems to demonstrate anatomy and his emphasis on students working independently with audio-visual aids. Alec MacQueen died in 1996.
