Administrative / Biographical History

The National Federation of Building Trade Operatives was a federation of building trade unions. It changed its name to the National Federation of Construction Unions in 1969. After the formation of the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians in 1971 the federation voted to end its existence.

Archivist's Note

National Federation of Building Trade Operatives material can be found with the UCATT archive. Some material is located in the TGWU archive. An authority file exists for the National Federation of Building Trade Operatives (GB 152 AAR503) and its successor, the National Federation of Construction Unions (GBR 0152 AAR505).

Some papers of the London Region of the National Federation of Building Trade Operatives are held in the Centre with the archive of the London Region of the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians at (MSS.170)

The main National Federation of Building Trade Operatives archive is located in the library of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. It is not (1978) catalogued but a brief list is available, a copy of which is held at the Modern Records Centre.

Custodial History

The National Federation of Building Trade Operatives' papers were deposited with those of the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians archive although some material can be found with the Transport and General Workers' Union archive. The initial UCATT deposit was made in 1974; accruals are listed below.
