Administrative / Biographical History

Grant & Burbey opened for business in Portsmouth on 25th October 1787 at 46 High Street. The partnership split in 1818 when Grant took over Godwin's Bank. It was restyled Grant, Gilman & Long. In 1888, it amalgamated with Maddison, Atherley & Co. of Southampton to become Grant & Maddison's Union Banking Company.The other half of the partnership went on to become Burbey, Loe & Co., and failed in 1841.
