Administrative / Biographical History
The Great Western Railway (GWR) was established by Act of Parliament in 1835. In 1923, government reorganisation led to the amalgamation of various railway companies in south and mid Wales as the Great Western Railway. Following nationalisation in 1948, the GWR was superseded by British Railways (Western Region).
