Hardback notebook containing part of a manuscript draft of 'The Drummer Boy' by Leon Garfield. The notebook starts at a point roughly equivalent to the beginning of chapter 5 of the published work and progresses through to roughly the end of chapter 9. Some sections of the manuscript are numbered, but this numbering is not consistent and some numbers have been omitted. The text evidences significant revision and reworking throughout, and there is evidence that some pages have been torn out of the notebook.
The notebook has also been reversed and used from the back, with the reversed pages appearing to be the start of an early version of 'The Simpleton' [published in 'Mr Corbett's Ghost, and Other Stories' (Longman, 1969)].
