Scope and Content

Seven hardback notebooks constituting a complete manuscript draft of 'Black Jack' by Leon Garfield (Longman, 1968). The notebooks were originally tied together to form a single bundle, with a loose paper label identifying them as 'Black Jack' [this original label can be found in file LG/01/03/01 with the first notebook in the sequence]. The notebooks are not numbered, but a rough sequence has been established and the notebooks are arranged below in that order.

Although, taken together, these notebooks do constitute a complete draft of the text, each notebook evidences a significant amount of revision and reworking and the movement from one to another does not show a consistent, linear development of the story from start to finish. Sections of text are often numbered, but this numbering is not consistent throughout and sections will often be revised numerous times in succession. In general, these numbered sections roughly equate to the chapter structure of the published work, but the text itself is very different to that of the published work. In many of the notebooks, sections of pages have been folded in half vertically to indicate that they have been superseded by revised text.
