Scope and Content

Hardback notebook containing part of a manuscript draft of 'The Drummer Boy' by Leon Garfield. The notebook begins with a section numbered '2' and continues to the end of section '4', which roughly equates to chapters 2-4 of the published book. The text evidences significant revision and redrafting throughout and in some places, pages has been folded in half vertically to indicate that the contents have been superseded by revised text.

Two pages at the back of the notebook have been used for a summary of 'Jack Holborn' (Constable, 1964). In addition, several loose leaves have been inserted into the back of the notebook, consisting of one page of brief notes relating to lays and sagas in translation; 1 page of brief notes relating to the censorship of books; one page which appears to be a fragment of 'The Drummer Boy'; and one page of notes by Garfield on his ignorance of books. All of these single pages appear to be fragments of longer works.
