Scope and Content

Research notebook compiled by Robert Barnes pertaining to public health and containing journal articles, book reviews, advertisements, pamphlets, statistics, and notes on the works and cases of other medical men (1686-1864). Most of the volume is concerned with discussion of the demographics of St. Leonard's parish, Shoreditch, including registration arrangements, population numbers and rates, birth and death rates, considerations of topography and water wells, water and air analysis, causes of insanity and infection, amounts of relief funds given to the poor, diarrhea, sources of milk, unburied bodies, and an abortion epidemic. The remainder of the volume contains general medical notes and reviews of non-medical literature.
