Illustration to 'William McGonagall: the truth at last'

Scope and Content

Two MS illustrations in black by Peter Sellers, of McGonagall in court being sentenced. On separate pieces of paper but mounted on the same piece of cardboard. The left drawing shows McGonagall standing in the dock (labelled ‘DOCK’ in MS) with what appears to be a large body behind him, possibly that of a policeman. A speech bubble ‘OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHH….’The drawing on the right shows a long nosed judge (in a box labelled ‘JUDGE’ in MS) glaring at him with a dotted line connecting the eyes of the two men to emphasise the portrayal of this gaze. MS caption underneath the left picture ‘JUDGE ARLINGTON BALLS PASSING SENTENCE ON MCGONAGALL.’ Signed ‘P. Sellers’ on a separate small piece of paper, taped to the bottom right of the cardboard. MS annotations in blue on the cardboard ‘8’, circled, above the left picture; ‘9’, circled, above the right picture and a line down the middle to divide the images. On the reverse, an MS annotation in blue ‘2871/24’.
