MS 'The bedside Milligan'

Scope and Content

MS draft of the story and poetry collection ‘The bedside Milligan’, with TS, MS and MS photocopied leaves, and interleaved drawings related to the poems (some on the same leaves as the poems themselves). Most stories stapled separately. Some MS annotations to make corrections and alterations to the poems and titles to the pictures. Jack Hobbs, with whom Milligan occasionally collaborated for some of his works, is mentioned in some of these annotations. Many poems dated, with dates ranging from 1953 to 1968. Many also labelled with the place of composition, which include ‘Woy Woy. Australia.’, Dublin, Bayswater, Finchley, ‘Over Elba’, ‘on the tube’, ‘On a train to Liverpool’, ‘St Lukes [sic] Wing | Woodside Hospital | Psychiatric Wing’, Paris, Bournemouth and ‘On a plane over Mexico’. Milligan’s children Silé and Sean are mentioned in the poems, one of which includes annotations written by the former. Robert Graves is also referred to in a short poem. The collection features some of Milligan’s serious writings, and subjects covered include the Korean War and the author’s experience of bipolar disorder.
