Eliza [Tabor] to Mary Tabor

Scope and Content

Still weak and will write letter a little at a time. Describes death of syce from cholera, after only one day's illness; his wife also dies next day; perhaps a blessing as life of a Hindu widow is almost worse than death. Describes Dinali festival, when hundred of lamps are placed outside every house and temple. Rains continuing very late, and delaying the usual gaieties, house cleaning new clothes etc. She does not enjoy this social season. Respects strictness with which all Mussalmen observe month of abstinence. Compares this with enormous meals eaten by British. Interested in Sara Coleridge's letters. Also Livingstone's journals.
