Eliza [Tabor] to Mary Tabor

Scope and Content

To her mother from Allahabad. Glad to take advantage of an invitation to go away for a week to a higher and cooler place. Great indignation locally about Lord Lytton's action in overruling the decision of the High Court judges on a case concerned with a man beating his servant. She mentions that this is accepted as the usual thing, but she does not approve of it. Her servants need scolding sometimes, but on the whole she prefers them to English servants. Hopes very much to visit Benares some time; she has been told of the magnificence of the festivals there, particularly at the eclipses. Describes visit to the Fort, and hall built by Akbar, once very fine but destroyed by the English.
