Scope and Content

To her mother from Allahabad. She was interest in extracts from Lord Macaulay's Life in her mother's letter. The rains have come at last. Describes an interesting drive to a Brahmin settlement on the Ganges, and the next day saw an alligator swimming there. She finds the trees finer than anything in England, now the foliage is no longer parched; she was not impressed at first. She is interested in details of Hindu religion and in particular the worship of Shiva, the Destroyer. The weather is still tiring and the flies a great plague; a man stands with a fan to keep these away at mealtimes. Mentions being lent some copies of Punch.
