Journals of holiday tours in the years 1868-1892. In general the destination was Switzerland, the journey there and back from England taking in, at various times, parts of Belgium, Germany, Austria-Hungary (specifically Bohemia and the Tyrol), Italy and France. Exceptions are MS.4507, documenting a tour taking Sewell to South-West France; MS.4508, taking him to the United States and Canada; MS.4512, taking him to Norway; MS.4513, taking him to Northern England, Scotland and Ireland; and MS.4515, taking him to Southern England and the Isle of Wight. The journals are illustrated with inset material such as advertisments, photographs and folding maps.

Administrative / Biographical History
Charles Brodie Sewell was born in 1817. He studied at Glasgow University in 1833/34 before beginning his medical studies as an apprentice in 1834. He entered University College Medical School in 1837 and in 1840 obtained his M.B., L.S.A. and M.R.C.S. He practised in London and in 1888/89 was President of the Metropolitan Counties Branch of the British Medical Association. In his mid-seventies he retired to Canterbury and died there in 1900.
The material is held in chronological order of composition.

The papers are available subject to the usual conditions of access to Archives and Manuscripts material, after the completion of a Reader's Undertaking.
Purchased 1930. The source is not known as the accession number given in Moorat's catalogue (72727) is erroneous.
