Norman Roy Grist was born in Doncaster, Yorkshire in  1918 . He was educated at Shawlands Academy, Glasgow, and then the University of Glasgow, Scotland. He gained the qualifications BSc,  1939  and MB, ChB,  1942 . He became a Lecturer at the  University of Glasgow from 1952-1959 and then a Senior Lecturer between 1959-1962. Grist went on to be a Reader in Viral Epidemiology from 1962-1965 and a Professor of Infectious Diseases between 1965-1983 at the same institution. Grist was also Director of Regional Virus Laboratory before retiring in  1983 .
