Garden design for Dr Holmes Sellors

Administrative / Biographical History

It is unclear which Dr Holmes Sellors was Cane’s client, however Thomas Holmes Sellors was knighted in 1963, before this plan was made; the use of 'Dr' instead of 'Sir' suggests Patick John Homes Sellors may have been the client for whom these plans were made

Thomas Holmes Sellors (1902-1987) was a President of the Royal College of Surgeons, emeritus surgeon to Middlesex Hospital and consultant cardiothoracic surgeon to the National Heart and Harefield Hospitals. He lived in London for most of his life but had acquired Spring Coppice Farm at Speen in Buckinghamshire in 1939. He was a keen and knowledgeable gardener. He married his third wife Marie Hobson Greenwall in 1955. They lived 16 Park Village East, London NW1 and at Spring Copice Farm, Speen from 1943 to 1984

Patrick John Holmes Sellors (1934-2010), son of Thomas Holmes Sellors, was one of the most prominent ophthalmologists in the United Kingdom during the latter part of the 20th century. Appointed to the consultant staff of St George's Hospital at the early age of 31, he became surgeon-oculist to the Royal household in 1974 and in 1980 surgeon-oculist to Her Majesty The Queen. He married Gillian Gratton Swallow in 1961. They lived at High Burrows, The Drive, Sutton, Belmont, Surrey from 1966
