Administrative / Biographical History

Elizabeth S Smellie attended the Glasgow & West of Scotland College of Domestic Science (Incorporated), Glasgow, Scotland, receiving her diploma in 1923 . In the same year she also received a certificate from Glasgow Corporation for her work at Milton Day Nursery, Glasgow.

Elizabeth, or Elspeth as she was also known, worked as a teacher of Domestic Science, taking classes at Hutchesons’ Girls’ Grammar School, Glasgow, between 1943 and 1945 . In 1950 , she became a member of the Educational Institute of Scotland and in the same year returned to the College as Head of Laundry. As well as lecturing in laundry she also gave classes in dressmaking and personal health and hygiene. She retired from the College in 1967  and died in c2001 .
