Scope and Content

The collection includes papers of three specialised trade boards:

(Ready Made and Wholesale Bespoke) Tailoring Trade Board: Loose-leaf binders of unsigned minutes of the Board, Administration Committee, and District Trade Committees, 1910-1925.

Corset Trade Board: Loose-leaf binder of unsigned minutes of the Board and committees, 1919-1926.

Shirt-making Trade Board: Loose-leaf binder of unsigned minutes of the Board, 1914-1919

Administrative / Biographical History

The Trade Boards Act of 1909 established trade boards empowered to fix minimum wage rates in certain unorganised trades such as clothing, where feeling had been aroused against 'sweated wages'.
