On receiving her letter from June, airmail to Palestine via the Cape, hearing next to nothing about Syria and finding it a relief to hear from her, their having gone to Palestine and wondering how they are going to live, the immediate future of Syria being a mystery, worrying about Taqui and Susie, wondering if they get British papers in Jerusalem, the book she sent to Aleppo, the Lake Artists' Society, wishing [the Altounyans] could be back with them, feeling shame in living in peace and plenty at such a time, the weather, spending the night at Troutbeck, Ursula's voluntary evacuee, [Janet]'s birthday and school progress, [Janet]'s shooting and rifle, Fred's stay and recovery, Kammie's health, Robin being busy over a book, and not hearing rumours.
