On her letters, Ruthie having a cold, the weather and having 'no summer at all', Robin teething and falling out of his cradle, Mr Saunders leaving and Robin missing him but the girls not feeling that he 'treated their doll quite rightly', gathering gooseberries for jam, David and Edith going for a holiday, Harriet intending to remain at Gillhead and her financial situation, Gershom being busy with Ruskin manuscripts and copying a portrait for money.
