H. F. Cowley papers

Scope and Content

Cowley wrote to the Westmoreland Gazette in 1960 regarding early flying experiments at Windermere. He was contacted by Sir Wavell Wakefield M.P., offering to send photographs, log books and papers belonging to his uncle Captain E. W. Wakefield, the first person to complete a successful hydroplane flight on Windermere in 1911, in 'Water Bird'. (Oscar Gnosspelius was the first person to take off from water on Windermere, but crashed shortly after. Subsequent flights in 1912 were successful). These papers include correspondence and many interesting photographs documenting early flight, and were transferred to Janet Gnosspelius in 1969.
