Administrative / Biographical History
Robin George Collingwood was born in Windermere, the Lake District, in 1889. The only son of artists W. G. Collingwood and his wife, Edith Mary (Dorrie) Isaac, Robin is perhaps the most well-known member of the Collingwood family. Robin was an exceptional student at University College, Oxford. At the age of 23, and prior to his graduation, he was elected as a fellow of Pembroke College and was later appointed Waynflete Professor of Metaphysical Philosophy at Magdalen College, Oxford, and a Fellow of the British Academy. He was both a leading British Idealist philosopher and an archaeologist and historian of the Roman Inscriptions in Britain. He died in 1943 after a series of strokes.
