Two letters from the Secretary for Appointments, 10 Downing Street:

14 May 2003: letter advising that the Prime Minister 'has it in mind' to recommend to the Queen that Ballard be appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).

14 May 2003: a photocopy of the above letter with an autograph annotation by Ballard: 'Now, is it Tony [Blair] or Cherie [Blair] who's my biggest fan?' Also, a photocopy of CBE return form on which Ballard has indicated with a tick in the appropriate box that he does not wish to be considered for the Award (signed 16 May 2003).

19 May 2003: a brief letter acknowledging Ballard's decision.
