Loughborough College of Technology was formed in 1952 when Loughborough College was divided into four separate institutions reflecting its main areas of interest. While Loughborough Training College, Loughborough College of Art, and Loughborough College of Further Education continued to be maintained by Leicestershire County Council, Loughborough College of Technology was financed by a direct grant from the Ministry of Education and had a national board of governors. As its predecessor, Loughborough College, had done the College of Technology provided engineering training 'on production' and by sandwich courses but under its new Principal, Dr HL Haslegrave, standards were raised and facilities improved. As a result, in 1957 Loughborough was designated a College of Advanced Technology, one of only ten institutions in England and Wales to be awarded such status. In 1966 Loughborough College of Technology was granted university status and was the first of the former Colleges of Advanced Technology to receive its royal charter. On 19 April 1966 it became Loughborough University of Technology.
