Administrative / Biographical History

Queen Margaret College was named after Margaret, Queen of the Scots (c1045-1093) and Saint. She was the wife of Malcolm III and was a pious woman devoted to the Church and to charitable works.

The College was incorporated under the Companies Acts in 1883 and opened in 1884 in North Park House, a mansion built in the late 1860s for two Glasgow merchants, John and Matthew Bell. The building was acquired by Mrs Isabella Elder, who gifted it to the College in 1883. It was used for the education of women students until 1935, when it was sold to the BBC.
