Scope and Content

MS.Add.4134: Copies of statutes and other papers, in Latin, 17th century, 92 folios: (fo. 5) University Charter, 26 April 1561; (fo. 29) University Statutes, 1570 (fo. 29).

There are 'Memoranda quaedam Logices Artem Spectantia' written from the opposite end of the book (fos 90-63), apparently by Nicholas Stuart, whose name appears on fo. 91v (17th century). On fos 18-19r are notes of Cambridge University and college statutes dated 'Jan 1 1852', in the hand of F.H. Dickinson. On fos 59-63, in the same hand, is an 'Index taken from the Dean of Windsor's copy of the quarto edn of the statutes of 1785 P VI Dec. 31 1851', and notes on the Statutes.

On fo. 1v: 'F. H. Dickinson' (19th century), the bookplate of the Duke of Sussex, and a cutting from a bookseller's catalogue, lot '129'. On fo. 2: 'Saml. Sandars Trin. Coll. A. M. London 1888 From Collections of D. of Sussex and F. H. Dickinson writer of '"English Service books 1850"'.

MS.Add.4150: Taxor's book, in English and Latin, 18th century, 96 folios. A Cambridge University taxor's book containing copies of charters, extracts from University Statutes, forms of proclamations and related papers. The versos are blank.

Inside the front cover is 'F. H. Dickinson Oct. 2 1858 5s', 'Saml Sandars A M Trin. Coll. Camb. 1888', and a cutting from the printed catalogue of F.H. Dickinson's sale, in which the manuscript was lot 130. On the last fly-leaf in pencil is 'Bennett' (19th century).

Administrative / Biographical History

The university's history can be dated back to the early thirteenth century, when scholars congregated in the city for the purpose of study. The first college, Peterhouse, was established in 1284.
