Scope and Content

LETTER: Lewis, Heron & Co. Shipowners, 10 Fenchurch Ave., London E.C. to Captain Robert Jones, Ship "Owenee", c/o Messrs. Gibbs, Bright & Co, Newcastle. After a fatal mistake of keeping his ship waiting a t Adelaide in the hope of obtaining a grain freight home they were at last faced with having to order her elsewhere and Captain Jones is now well on his way to Newcastle, where they hope he will arrive in a few days. They have chartered his ship in accordance with the terms of a copy of charter to load a cargo of Wallsend coal for a direct Nitrate port between Taltal and Iquique at a freight of 14s.6d. This is poor business, but there are some ships loading at Newcastle at less. Everything depends on whether they shall be able to obtain a good nitrate freight home as to whether the voyage ends in disaster or not. But in any event they can only hope to merely make ends meet, and that only by taking big risks in the way of insurance. The cabled today to Messrs. Gibbs, Bright & Co. to ask them to inform him that the ship was chartered. They impress upon him to exercise the strictest economy. They had made a contract with a man named Callen for the discharging and lightening of ballast, but he broke his contract and consequently are again free. Buckle offered to do the work at 9d. and they enclose a copy of a tender which he made, but which they have not accepted. The "Swanhilda" and "Marion Frazer" employed a man named Taylor at less. They do not know his destination on the West coast but feel it might be Antofagasta, Caleta Coloso or Mejillones. They will know where his is to discharge before he sails and they will write to such port to give any information regarding its facilities. He will need to be very careful in dealing with his consignees on the coast with regard to exchange. They were penalized to the extent of over £50 with the "Marion Frazer" under similar charter, and by threatening legal proceedings got the money refunded. They ask him to obtain a certificate showing the rate of exchange current at the port on the day of final discharge, and exercise his own discretion as to the amount of cargo he takes on board remembering that they have £4,000 at owners risk uninsured. They are doing all they can to charter him to load at his coal discharging port. They enclose correction slips to be inserted in Scotts Code Book. They have received £2 from father of apprentice Freeborn to use as pocket money for the lad. They give instructions as to what he should do in the case of deserters. In a postscript they inform him that they will be sending stores which he will require to complete the voyage home as soon as they receive the necessary particulars.
