Scope and Content

LETTER: John Thomas, 1 Bute Buildings, Docks, Cardiff to Captain Jones, Lord Tredegar, Amlwch informing him that he arrived at Cardiff last evening. He got the French steamer from Pernambuco to Havre. He was extremely sorry to learn on receipt of his letter that he had redued the insurance before the ship left Cardiff, and reminds Captain Jones of his promise to advise him at Pernambuco. Had he known about the insurance he would have proceeded to Barbados rather than take any risks as there are many vessels lost in Natal every year. Everything saved from the ship had to be handed at the Custom House and sold by public auction. He will send all the documents etc. in respect of the "Lord Tredegar" by the same post as this letter. The balance paid to him was only £77,628. As Captain Jones will see by the accounts. He was obliged to sell nearly all his own effects to pay his passage which cost as much as he earned since leaving Cardiff. He will send his accounts as soon as possible. He is not well. Asks Captain Jones to acknowledge receipt of documents.
