COPY LETTER: William Lewis & Co, 26 Chapel St, Liverpool to Captain W.W. Fisher, Ship "Talus", Cape Town. They wrote last on the 12th inst. which they beg to confirm. They shall soon be expecting news of his safe arrival at Cape Town. They have now received his advance freight a/c showing that there will be a balance of freight to receive by him of £258.5s. Every charge in this charter has been paid and he will have no expenses in this respect beyond a £5.5s. agency fee to his consignees. They have had to pay stevedore on a basis of £4094 tons, and they have not the slightest doubt that this is a gross imposition, but they fear they are helpless. They stress upon him the importance of saving time and money which are so vital to the success of the voyage. They are negotiating at present to charter him from Newcastle, N.S.W. to a port on the West Coast and home and if they succeed it will be at almost 5s. per ton more freight than they obtained last voyage. All the markets are stagnant and they fear the prospects for some time to come are more gloomy. He has not sent them a list of crew from London and they ask him to make use of the forms they have given. They also ask him to be particularly careful to see that the ship has sufficient ballast. They are sending him a copy to London to Brown's Towage Contract to Sydney and Newcastle, N.S.W. also a copy of contract made from provisions etc. at Newcastle N.S.W.
