Scope and Content

LETTER: John Thomas, Natal, Rio Grande de Norte to Captain Jones, Amlwch reporting that on the 10th inst, at 4 a.m. the Pilot came on board, weighted anchor and set all sail. Wind was light from S.S.W. About 5.45 a.m. the vessel struck on the bar on rocks. He failed to get her off and discharged as much of the cargo as possible but only managed to save a few hundred bags as the ship was filling with water. A survey was held on her yesterday. The surveyor stated in his report that the vessel's hold was full of water, the back broken, main rail broken, main rigging carried away, etc. portion of the decks bursted up. They recommended for the vessel to be stripped of gear and sails and be sold for the benefit of all concerned, as they consider her to be a total wreck. As soon as the survey was done he wired as follows: Sinecure Sagacious, optional. He got the vessel stripped of sails and gear and got as much of the stores as possible on shore. Nearly all the provisions and many more things were destroyed. He does not think they will get much for the wreck. He hopes to receive a telegram from Captain Jones in a few days.
