Album of European travel photographs collected by Carrie S. North, undated, c.1891

Scope and Content

The black and white printed photographic images which comprise the collection have been pasted into an album. Many of them carry a printed identification of the subjects. These include landscapes, buildings, monuments, statues and street scenes in France and Italy, including the islands of Capri and Corsica. The images were presumably purchased from souvenir shops or taken from published guides of the places concerned. Vehicular traffic is horse drawn, and although no dates are given the style of the photographs dates from c.1880-1900.

Places featured in these images include: Paris, Marseilles, Algiers, Hyeres, Cannes, Nice, Villefranche, Monte Carlo, Menton, Bordighera, San Remo, Genoa, Pisa, Logarno, Bastia, Corte, Suarella, Vivario, Ajaccio, Vignale, Naples and Capri.

Administrative / Biographical History

The name Carrie S. North is embossed on the front of this album. No further details about her background are given in the volume, although the subject material of the photographs suggests that she came from a wealthy background in order to be able to undertake a European tour and record the results. The birth of a Carrie Sarah North was registered in Nottingham in June 1863. In the 1891 census, Carrie S. North was resident at the Perranporth Hotel, Perranporth, Cornwall. She is described as being from Nottingham and in the company of three other women from Nottingham and Southwell, Nottinghamshire.

The General Register Office indexes reveal that in the summer of 1891, Carrie Sarah North married William Howard Bradwell in Nottingham. The photograph album may therefore be a record of their honeymoon. This was probably William Howard Bradwell (1867-1922), a leading auctioneer in Nottingham, President of the Auctioneers' and Estate Agents' Institute in 1915. In 1911, when he joined the Bromley House Library, he gave his address as 7 Cavendish Crescent, The Park, Nottingham. A brief biography is given in Robert Mellors, 'Men of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire' (Nottingham, 1924), available online at [accessed 07/07/2015].

The couple had two daughters: Joyce M. Bradwell born in 1892, who married Claud Presland in 1921, and Doris H. Bradwell born in 1896, who married Francis Alan Wright in Nottingham in 1922. The death of Carrie S. Bradwell, aged 96, was registered in Derby in the December quarter of 1959.
