Scope and Content

The volume bears the bookplate of the Manchester Medical Society which indicates that it was donated to them by Clay in 1861 and subsequently allocated the reference Q 154 viz. their 1890 library catalogue. The flyleaf has been signed 'Charles Clay M.D. 1857, and the spine reads 'Young's midwifery'. This is volume 2 of 2 and contains lectures 29-50. Folios 167-178 are blank

The lectures are clearly numbered but not dated, and the contents are as follows: (29-33) preternatural labours [breech presentation] & turning the child, (34) problems with the umbilical cord & floodings, (35) twins, (36) three or four children & effects of the imagination, (37) deformities in children [congenital abnormalities] & the treatment of lying-in women, (38-39) disorders of lying-in women, (40) tumours of the breast [breast neoplasms], (41) fevers, (42) case seen on the ward of the face presenting, (43) puerperal fever, (44) puerperal fever & hospital fever, (45) management of new born infants, (46) temperature & suitable nurses & disorders of new-borns, (47) disorders of new-borns continued, (48) venereal distemper in children & smallpox, (49) inoculation against smallpox & dentition, (50) dentition continued.
