The title page reads 'Midwifery taken from Dr Young containing whatever is essential to be known in the history and present practice of the art. There is no attempt to number, date, or mark the start and end of individual lectures but clear headings are evident throughout. The subjects covered are as follows: history of midwifery, diseases of children, the pelvis, parts of generation, diseases of the parts of generation, laceration and convulsion, of the stone (kidney stones), sounding, the perineum, the ovaria, the uterus, of generation, of the progress of the foetus in utero, changes the uterus undergoes, of the touch (physical examinations), connection between the mother and foetus, connection of the placenta and uterus, of the menses, chlorosis [hypochromic anaemia], obstruction of the menses [amenorrhoea], cure, immoderate flux of the menses, hysteria, symptoms of pregnancy, disorders of pregnancy, haemorrhoids, oedematous swellings, cramps, convulsions, palsy [paralysis], small pox, cough, lues venerea [syphilis], and floodings.
