Shorthand Notes of Chemical Lectures and Case Lectures

Scope and Content

All the notes are in shorthand using Byrom's system.

Lectures 1-45 of Fordyce's Chemical Lectures can be found on ff.1-39, which are numbered as such. The notes are set out in two columns on each page with lectures 1-25 on the recto of each page, and lectures 26-45 found upside down on the verso of each page running backwards from f.39 to f.1 where the page numbering continues with 40-78.

Lectures 46-80 of the same series continue in a similar manner on ff.40-89 and the folios have been numbered 79-128. Lectures 46-63 are on the recto and lectures 64-80 upside down on the verso of each page running backwards from f.89 to f.40, where the page numbering continues with 129-178.

Again, lectures 81-90 can be found on ff.90-107 and the folios have been numbered 179-195. Lectures 81-86 are on the recto and lectures 87-90 upside down on the verso of each page running backwards from f.107 to f.93, where the page numbering continues with 196-210.

Notes of Fordyce's Case Lectures can be found on ff.108-154 this time running quite straightforwardly with the writing predominantly on the recto only and constituting lectures 3-19. There is no page numbering in this section. Case lectures are what might be known elsewhere as clinical lectures and represent more practical medical teaching.
