Lectures on Midwifery Vol. 2

Scope and Content

The first 111 folios have the original foliation 1-111, folios 111v.-116 have the original pagination pp.112-121, and the rest of the volume is unnumbered. The writing is predominantly on the recto only and there is an index in the rear.

The contents of the lectures according to the index are as follows: particular rules for turning, of detention of the head, of opening the head when detained [craniotomy], of extracting the head when separated, twins, monsters [abnormalities, severe teratoid], period of delivery, floodings, delivery by unnatural passages, caesarean section, management of women after delivery, miliary fever, milk fever [mastitis], metastasis lactea, tearing of the perineum, treatment of the child, injuries during birth, injuries preceding birth, and diseases after birth, red gum [papular urticaria], aphtha, convulsions, watery gripes, jaundice, inflammation of the umbilicus, periodical gripes, the choice of a nurse, breast glasses, and pessaries.

The lecture notes end on f.82 with the comment 'finis', but additional notes continue on ff.83-111 which cover fatal circulation, theories of the passage of fluids from the mother to the foetus, theories of the nourishment of the foetus, theory of conception, and old instruments of midwifery. Whilst these notes appear quite separate to the preceding lectures they still refer to 'Dr L' throughout suggesting they are still taken from Lowder's work.
