Volume 1 of 2 in which Harrison records significant events in his life each year in preparation for writing his autobiography. This volume covers events from January 1857 to October 1881. The title page reads 'Summary of Events from 1857 to end of 1881' and in pencil 'looked over April 1888'. He records events such as birthdays, weddings, funerals, illnesses, the weather, his travels, and social events as well as things relevant to his medical career, for example the visit of Edinburgh surgeon James Syme (1799-1870) to Manchester. More unusual events are also noted including a comet in 1858, for which he includes a small drawing, and some international events such as the death of Napoleon III. The notes can be quite brief. There are 37 numbered folios in total but f.31 has been removed.
