Scope and Content

The lecture notes cover 152 folios numbered 243-394, with the writing on the recto only, and an additional 2 folios at the front including a title page, and 6 at the back.

The title page reads 'Midwifery taken from Dr Tho Young Vol 2nd'. There is no attempt to number, date, or mark the start and end of individual lectures but clear headings are evident throughout. The subjects covered are as follows: floodings (carried over from vol. 1), cases of the time when women generally go into natural labour, labours (natural, laborious, and preternatural), time proper for putting to bed, things necessary for the woman and child, extraction of the placenta, manner of extracting the placenta in abortions, of laborious births, forceps cases, the caesarean operation, of preternatural labours [breech presentation], breech cases, of twins, the manner of delivering twins, the treatment of childbed women, the several diseases, suppression of urine, hysteric spasms, and after-pains.
