Scope and Content

A handwritten selection of extracts from papers relating to the practise of midwifery and medicine that were contributed to the Gentleman's Magazine by Samuel Merriman (1771-1852). An index of contributions is given in the front of the manuscript and the contents are as follows:

  • Hogarth's Caricature of Mary Tofts the Rabbit Breeder, 22 February 1842, pp.7-15
  • Physicians & Surgeons Ennobled; origin of the profession of accoucheur, 8 April 1843, pp.16-23
  • The Child Bed Privilege or Rights, 3 June 1844, pp.24-32
  • On Women Taking Their Rights Before Childbirth, 11 August 1844, pp.33-34
  • Anecdotes of Julian Clement, 30 May 1845, pp.35-43
  • Notices of Gideon Delawne, 1847, pp.44-48. This section is a printed extract that has been inserted into the binding and its pages numbered in sequence with the rest of the volume.

Attached to the inside of the front cover with sealing wax is letter from Merriman addressed to Radford dated 1 January 1851 in which he discusses papers in The Lancet and in the Gentleman's Magazine. The envelope is also attached.

The volume was formerly part of the Radford Library, St Mary's Hospital, Manchester where it was allocated the reference Q 157 viz. their 1877 catalogue. It has since been allocated the reference J6 M24 as part of an alternative system.
