Scope and Content

The manuscript has the original foliation 1-180, writing is on the recto only with occasional notes on the version, and there is an index in the rear. The lectures are not individually numbered but there are dates on the verso of several folios running through the manuscript that look to be dating the start of each new lecture from 24th December 1791 to 15th February 1792. If this is the case there are a total of 35 lectures in this volume.

The subjects covered in the lectures according to the index are as follows: definition of midwifery, of the pelvis and parts, the anatomy, physicality and pathology of the external and internal female organs of generation, of the ovum, physiology of the umbilicus, placenta and membranes & waters, of the gravid uterus, the period of pregnancy, the care of pregnant women, diseases of pregnancy, disorders to which they are liable at other times, of touching to distinguish pregnancy and its progress, labour and its progress, division of labours, remarks & appearances during labour, apparatus, signs of labour, stages of labour, of a natural labour, extraction of the placenta, lingering labour, laborious labour, and preternatural labour [breech presentation].
