Cline's Lectures on Anatomy & Surgery

Scope and Content

The notes from Cline's lectures are on 412 numbered folios with an alphabetical index in the rear. On the first page has been written 'James Barlow, surgeon, Blackburn, Lancashire 1811' and 'Cline's Lectures on Anatomy and Surgery 1788'. The hand that these two inscriptions have been written in appears to match the rest of the text and the date would fit with the period when Barlow would have been studying. Although not marked on the manuscript itself it is known to have been allocated the reference Q 1027 by the Manchester Medical Society viz. their 1890 library catalogue.

There is no attempt to number or date individual lectures although clear subject headings are evident throughout. The contents of the lectures according to the index in the rear are as follows: absorbent system; adipose membrane, diseases of & substance; alimentary canal, diseases & structure; anasarca [oedema] & treatment; history of anatomy; making anatomical preparations; arteries in general, diseases of, structure, & in particular; aneurysm; animal body; ankylosis; abdominal ring; abscess in bone; bladder; constituent parts of blood; bones of the head, ear, thorax, superior extremities, inferior extremities, pelvis, diseases of, inflammation of; brain; female breast; bronchocele; bile; brain of negroes [African continental ancestry group]; brain of foetus; formation of callus; cancer, chimney sweepers; cartilages; cataracts; cellular membrane; coagulable lymph; corns; cancer uteri; croup; cornea; cranium [skull]; dentition; dura mater; diaphragm; digestion; disease of testes; dislocations; dropsy of ovarium; the ear; emphysema; empyema; exfoliation; the eye; epididymis; fistula in perineo; fractures of vertebrae, coccyx, clavicle, scapula, radius & ulna, glenoid cavity, femur, tibia, fibula, patella, bones of foot, head; ganglions; gall bladder; gall stones; glands; glandula renalis [renal glands]; salivary glands; synovial glands; thymus gland; thyroid gland; gubernaculum; guinea worm [dracunculus nematode]; organs of generation; parotid gland; maxillary & sublingual glands; gutta serena; hair; heart; humours, aqueous, vitrious & crystalline; hernia; integuments; intestines; irritability; cranium of Indians; kidney; white swelling of knee; lacteals; ligaments; liver; lymphatics; luxuriancy of bone; membrana pupillaris; medulla; muscles; mediastinum; nails; nerves; nodes; oesophagus; osteology; omentum; ovarium;pancreas; pelvis, parts within & difference between males and females; penis; pericardium, inflammation of and dropsy of; polypi; diseases of prostate gland; psoas abscess; puerperal fever; retina; rickets; scirrhous rectum [rectal neoplasms]; saculi mucosi; scrofula [tuberculosis, lymph node]; sensibility; scrotum; spermatic chord; spina bifida [spinal dysraphism]; spina ventosa [tuberculous dactylitis]; curvature of the spine; mode of passing sound; superfoetation accounted for; spleen; sympathy; saliva; strictures; skin; tendon, structure of and destitute of sensation; descent of testes; taste organs; tunica vaginalis; testis; thoracic viscera; diseases of the urethra; uterus; vesicula seminalis [seminal vesicles]; venereal nodes; worms in the intestines; white swellings.
