Administrative / Biographical History

Founded in 1923, the Neath Antiquarian Society is the successor to the Neath Philosophical and Antiquarian Society (1834-1867), its aim being to study the history of Neath and district. The society has been involved with the excavation of Neath Abbey, St Margaret's Chapel, Coedffranc, and in the discovery of the Roman fort at Neath. It has collected paintings and engravings of Neath and district, a sizeable collection of local archives, books on the history of Neath, and historical periodicals. It has also produced books on the history of Neath itself, and publishes The Transactions of the Neath Antiquarian Society.
