Rev D.D. Williams Papers

Three bundles of letters addressed to D.D. Williams from various correspondents, 1919-1937. Amongst the topics discussed are his higher degree at Liverpool University in 1919, his election to the chair of the Association of the North (C.M.) in 1931, his resignation in 1937 and his work on T. J. Wheldon. There is also correspondence between the elders of Moss Side chapel and the Rev. Roger Edwards of Mold dated 1861.

The literary works of D.D. Williams are mostly essays on various historical subjects and place names, composed for entry in Eisteddfod competitions, 1904-1913. Also included are addresses and notes and his M.A. thesis Political Prophecies in Welsh Literature : A Comparative Study, 1919.

Born in 1862 in Croesor, Merioneth, David David Williams attended the Bala Theological College. He served at Oswald Road chapel, Oswestry for 10 years before receiving a calling from Moss Side chapel, Manchester and then moving to David Street (Belvidere Road) chapel, Liverpool where he stayed for over 20 years. He resigned in 1937 and moved to live in Prestatyn, Flintshire.

He was an excellent preacher and a very active minister, serving on various councils, associations and assemblies, and working as editor of Cylchgrawn Hanes y Cyfundeb. He was also well known as a literary man, winning numerous Eisteddfod prizes for his essays. He is the author of the memoir of T.J. Wheldon, Cofiant Thomas Jones Wheldon, B.A. : ynghyda rhai o'i ysgrifau a'i bregethau (1925) and of the history of temperance in Gwynedd, Hanes dirwest yng Ngwynedd (1921). He died in July 1938.

Arranged according to record type and chronologically where possible. The collections of letters are arranged alphabetically according to name of correspondent. The collection was received at different occasions and has been incorporated into the General Collection of Bangor Manuscripts
