Scope and Content

This hardcover book looks like a publication as some of the contents are printed. However, it does not appear to have been published. The volume is signed on the third page by the author: 'Alfred Forbes Sealy, Cambridge, March 16th 1856.' This is followed by 2 pages of a printed introduction about collecting bird eggs in general, and there is a third page in manuscript. This is followed by 170 pages, each with printed names of birds (scientific and english) with notes on the nest and the eggs.

Administrative / Biographical History

Alfred Forbes Sealy (1831-1894) collected birds and birds eggs while in England in the first thirty years of his life. He is the author of 'A classified list of the names & latin synonyms of the British birds' published in 1853. He donated part of his ornithological collection to the University Museum of Zoology, Cambridge. He lived in Cochin, India for many years where he was headmaster of a college and in 1890 became Director of Public Instruction.

Manuscripts can be consulted on appointment only. The Museum of Zoology is open Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 17:00 pm. Access and reproduction is at the discretion of the Archivist.
