Building Society RecordsD/D B Soc

Landore Permanent Benefit Building Society (Landore Building Society). Established in 1874-75 as the Landore Permanent Benefit Building Society. In May 1923 the name changed to Landore Permanent Building Society before becoming the Landore Building Society in September 1928. Meetings were held at the Old Siloh Chapel Schoolroom, Landore. By 1935 the head office was at 61 Wind Street, Swansea and by the 1940s the address was given as Cornhill Chambers, Christina Street, Swansea. Landore Building Society changed its name to South West Wales in November 1963. South West Wales transferred engagements to Bristol & West in December 1977 and later converted to the public limited company Bank of Ireland in July 1997.DD B Soc/1/hub

Swansea Imperial Building Society. The society was incorporated in 1878. The offices were bombed in 1941, destroying all the ledgers and cash books. Swansea Imperial Permanent transferred engagements to South West Wales in January 1968.DD B Soc/2/hub

Third Swansea Union Terminating Building Society. Set up in November 1913 with registered offices at 19 Heathfield Street, Swansea. Subscription meetings were held on the first Tuesday of every month. Due to the outbreak of the First World War the society had some difficulties so transferred assets and liabilities to the Landore Permanent Building Society.DD B Soc/3/hub

South West Wales Building Society. South West Wales Building Society includes engagements of the former Clydach Permanent Benefit in January 1968; the former Swansea Imperial Permanent in January 1968 and the former Swansea Rock Permanent in April 1970.DD B Soc/4/hub

Provident Permanent Building Society. Based in Exeter. It includes advances for Llanelli and Port Talbot, Cardiff and others. Provident Permanent Building Society transferred engagements to Bristol & West in July 1956.DD B Soc/5/hub
