George Robert Crotch and Joseph Woodfall Ebsworth: Extracts and Notes

Scope and Content

Notes and extracts in the hands of G.R. Crotch and J.W. Ebsworth, 504 folios. The main part of the volume is taken up with 'The Return from Parnassus', an extract from Sir Thomas Hawkins's Origins of English drama, 3, p. 301. The contents also include: (fo. 2) notes on J.E. Tennent, 'Ceylon'; (fo. 441) extracts from A. Ramsay, Tea-table miscellany, Calliope or the musical miscellany and the Saturday magazine; (fo. 446) notes on entomology. Fos 4, 82-440, 454 and many of the versos are blank.

Administrative / Biographical History

George Robert Crotch (1842-1874) was born at Bishop's Hull, Somerset. He matriculated at St John's College, Cambridge, in 1861 (B.A., 1864; M.A., 1867), and became an assistant at the University Library in 1866, and second assistant librarian, 1867-1871. He worked as an assistant at the Cambridge Museum of Comparative Zoology, before emigrating to the United States. Crotch compiled a Catalogue of British coleoptera. He died in Philadelphia on 16 June 1874.

Joseph Woodfall Ebsworth (1824-1908) was born on 2 September 1824 in Lambeth, Surrey. After studying art in Edinburgh he became chief artist to a firm of Manchester lithographers in 1848, but soon moved to Glasgow, where he became a master at the school of design. He entered St John's College, Cambridge, in 1860 (B.A., 1864; M.A., 1867), and was a curate from 1864 to 1871, and vicar of Molash, Kent, 1871-1894. Ebsworth published old English poems and ballads. He died on 7 June 1908 at Ashford, Kent.
