Administrative / Biographical History

The union was founded as the Amalgamated Association of Card and Blowing Room Operatives in 1886. It became the Amalgamated Association of Card and Blowing and Ring Room Operatives in 1924, the National Association of Card, Blowing and Ring Room Operatives in 1952 and the National Union of Textile and Allied Workers in 1968. In 1974 it merged with the Amalgamated Weavers' Association to form the Amalgamated Textile Workers' Union.

An authority file exists for the National Union of Textile and Allied Workers (GB 152 AAR849) and its predecessors : the National Association of Card, Blowing and Ring Room Operatives (GBR 0152 AAR850); the Amalgamated Association of Card and Blowing and Ring Room Operatives (GBR 0152 AAR851); and the Amalgamated Association of Card and Blowing Room Operatives (GBR 0152 AAR852).

The main archives of the General, Municipal, Boilermakers and Allied Trades Union, including the boilermakers' section, remain with the union at its national college. Some records have, however, been transferred to the Working Class Movement Library, Salford : see Working Class Movement Library, Bulletin, no. 2 (1992), pp. 67-92, for a description of these records. Some records of the National Union of Tailors and Garment Workers are also held in the London Archive, Department of Politics, Queen Mary & Westfield College, London. The records of numerous textile unions are in the Lancashire Record Office. Other material, including some Blacksmiths' Society records, is held by the Centre.
